May is Stroke Awareness Month

Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the United states. Nearly 800,000 people are effected in the U.S. alone. A stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It occurs when a blood vessel is blocked by a clot or ruptures. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, which causes brain cells to die.

Prevention plays a key role in keeping your stroke risks low. You should continue to have regular check-ups with your doctor as well taking these simple steps:

 

Learning the warning signs of a stroke and calling 9-1-1 immediately is very important in preventing death and disability from stroke. remember, when it comes to treating stroke, the sooner, the better. Think FAST:
