The Pet Effect

Sundance and Cassidy

If you are affected by anxiety, depression, or stress, you are not alone. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, over 40 million Americans over the age of 18 are affected by anxiety, depression, and stress. While there are many ways to treat mental illness, the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) is working to increase knowledge of the health benefits of pets. Having a pet can help alleviate stress, anxiety, depressions and feelings of loneliness. A 2016 study conducted by HABRI found that pets provide a sense of security and routine that helped provide emotion and social support.

Spending quality time with your pet can also have a positive impact on your health as well! Having a pet promotes a more active lifestyle and can therefore help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Of course, pet companionship is a great way to support mental health, but it does not replace the need for medical advice or treatment for certain conditions.
